I’ve always rolled my eyes at the people who claim they can’t live without certain products. Don’t get me wrong, I’m that girl who invests her heart and soul into a product, convinces all 600 of her Facebook friends to try it and converts the weak ones to the dark side. So, I’m sorry for being a hypocrite. But, we all know these cries of love only last until the next best thing comes out. Remember the hype behind the original Makeup Forever HD foundation? Well, guess what, that’s old news. It’s all about the Too Faced Born This Way now. Why? Because it’s better and newer and cooler and everyone’s using it. Sorry ABH Contour Kit, Imma let you finish but the KVD Shade and Light palette is one of the greatest contour palettes of all time.
And then there’s Hourglass, the exception to the “there’s always something better” rule. Made out of unicorn tears and the hair of this horse, the hourglass powders are next level s***.
I have the Ambient Lighting Powder trio, which features Dim Light, Incandescent Light, and Radiant Light encased in an elegant brown mirrored palette. Dim Light is closest to my skin tone, and because of its sheer formula, will suit an array of skin tones. I use it all over as a finishing powder for that “lit from within” look. Incandescent light is the perfect subtle highlight, archetypal of the much coveted ethereal glw. Radiant Light is a golden bronze, suitable for adding warmth to the cheeks. These are also lovely used mixed together to make your perfect ratio or as eyeshadows.
This. Blush. Though. This was my first Hourglass product purchase and gateway drug. I have the shade Mood Exposure (mauve plum), and out of all my blushes, is my most used. I find it to be very pigmented and I barely need to tap my brush to get a beautiful saturation. The ribbons of ambient lighting powder add a natural, youthful flush to the cheeks; it also gives dimension by mimicking the natural texture of skin. No matte, flat face here. I’ve had this blush for two years (gross I know, it’s probably expired) but that sensibly justifies the price tag.
A totally underrated product is their 1.5mm gel eyeliner. This thin kohl is some kind of beautiful. It’s super tiny and pigmented and easy to use. The thin nib allows for cool calligraphic designs or a clean cat flick or a simple barely-there line. Not to mention, it doesn’t budge.
Hourglass products are great for no-makeup looks because they enhance your existing features as opposed to hiding them. That being said, many MUA’s like using Hourglass products for editorial shoots because they’re undetectable to cameras and don’t cake up easily. If Lisa Eldridge and Wayne Goss rate it, so do I.
