We’re two weeks into January and you know what that means? Designers and fashion houses are releasing their 2016 runway collections while we sit and wait for all the fashion weeks to come. Get ready to start trending. You might have some of these pieces already, and some you’ll have to wait to launch in stores to curate your own #NYFW outfit inspo. Flats are making a come back, but not in the strappy Aquazzura Christy kind of way. The 70s are in , but more importantly, was it ever out? Giving the cold shoulder has never looked so good, with or without the attitude. And for all you sleeping beauty’s out there, just tell your boss that the messy bed-head and hazy bedroom eyes are in. 1. The Flat Mule: My personal favorite, the flat mule will make having a strong shoe game inexcusably easy. I mean, they’re slippers. *Ahem* excuse, they’re flat mules. Who doesn’t love a good mule, especially when both New York socialites and LA free spirits can agree on them. I’m getting a present day Annie Hall meets ‘frisco urbanite type of vibe and I’m all about it. I need these navy blue suede and black leather capped toe Rag and Bone ones.
2. 70s suede: If you ask me, 70s and suede, especially together, are never out of style. Sorry not sorry to whoever made sliced bread, because moto and suede are the greatest thing to happen. The universal ease of a moto jacket made with the soft texture of suede goes beyond Coachella. Jewel toned suede juxtaposed with the badass style of a moto jacket can be worn by Harley Davidsons and manic pixie dream girls alike. Dear sweet, sweet 70s suede, will you marry me? My pick goes to this baby.
3. Decent exposure: Everyone likes a little shoulder cleavage, a little collar bone action, a little lack of fabric. Skin tight and obnoxious bandage dresses aren’t sexy, nor are they comfortable. Open shoulders with a billowy or A-line silhouette are a match made in 2016 heaven.
4. Skip the blow dry bar: and reach for that Bumble and Bumble sea salt spray you bought circa 2012. Yes, it’s no longer for beach days and breezy summer nights. Give it a month and everyone will be rocking natural locks at work. Or by all means, start the trend. A structured, sophisticated outfit, with an “I don’t give a shit, I always look good” hair screams Olsen twins (AKA everything goals).
5. Lovely lids: Pink eyeshadow, now this is new (well since like 1985). I know you thought it was nearly impossible to look like Kirsten Dunst in any given Coppola film, but not anymore ladies. Go for a sunset inspired smoke eye with a swipe of Mac’s Expensive Pink all over the lid for hazy, youthful but lived in eye look. Match with a sheer, pink stained lip as if you just ate a fancy organic, non-gmo strawberry popsicle.
Tip: Trends are just trends. What’s on this week’s radar can become “so yesterday” in less than 24hrs, so take them all with a grain of salt. Don’t get too committed or else you’ll find yourself 3 organza tea length skirts too deep. Wear with care and make it you. Hell, start your own trend before any SS/AW campaigns. Also, any “current” and “in” pieces are best paired with played down basics. Whether you invest in a staple item or prefer fast fashion, own your look.
