Fuck your Christmas, fall is the greatest time of year. As a full-time home body, summertime is when I meet my yearly quota for going out. Now that everyone’s inclined to slow down and use “it’s cold out” as an excuse to stay home, I THRIVE. I’m an extrovert with loner-type tendencies; I constantly seek alone time because I’m a sociable, outgoing person. People think I’m reserved, but they don’t realize it’s by choice – whereas introverts/loners seek social scenario’s to compensate and fill the void. Since I’m naturally well in social situation, I actively seek, cherish, and spread thin my alone time. As fall is the season of alone, self-care, hygge, activities like staying in, reading, baking, straight-up chillin’ in solitude is finally cool again. Anyways, while everyone is S.A.D., I’ll be out foraging and using these things:
Eminence Pumpkin Latte Mask – I am the ideal consumer. I’m a skincare hoe and put efficacy before packaging, marketing, etc. But put pumpkin latte in the title and I’ll fucking buy it. I probably won’t even use this.
PF Candle Co. Pinon Candle – My favourite candle of all time, ever (Teakwood and Tobacco is a close second). It’s wintery, like the aftermath of a bonfire from a lodge in Big Sur. Cedar, vanilla, and a dash of Abercrombie & Fitch. Also, idk what my deal is, but lighting candles are totally ceremonial to me. For ex., I can’t light one if my room is dirty or if the space I’m in is cluttered. To me, it’s part of self-care/self-respect to honour the process. god, i’m realizing so many things about myself right now, I feel like kylie circa 2016.
Death Valley Nails in Swamp Sparrow – My dad got me this from Cattywampus Crafts when we visited Ojai. Swamp Sparrow is a deep, leafy red, perfect for the witchy season. They use a super-clean, 10-free formula and give 10% of their profits to the Mojave Desert Land Trust and to Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation!!!!!! Also, their desert girl branding is so me.
Two Girls, One Ghost – If you want to get scared, but not scared shitless. Personal preference, Corinne, Sabrina, and I probably wouldn’t be friends in school, but they’re less-than-intimidating white girl voices make listening to their ghost stories a lot more palatable. The fact that they believe in ghosts aside, this is up there with Lore.
Dead Man’s Bones – This will be the tenth year in a row I’ve waited to listen to this album. A whole fucking decade. Sung in collaboration with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir (founded by Flea) makes it sounded even more eery. Listening to it is alo sacred, it’s one of the very few traditions I abide to. Only when the temperature drops and the chunky knits are out, can I shuffle it on iTunes. P.S. It’s inspired by the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. P.P.S. It’s co-founded by Ryan Gosling.
Cooking/Baking – Autumnal food is my favourite. Fuck, it’s the time of the harvest! Squash, pumpkin, artichoke, apples, cinnamon, soup!!! I’ve got so much pureed pumpkin on hand, I put it in everything: pancakes, smoothies, spreads, dressing, lattes, et cetERaaaaa. Also, I’ve been using vanilla-infused ghee and it makes everything feel HYGGE.
Dry-brushing – This is one of those ritual things I do, but tend to be more religious about it during the colder half of the year. I’ve got to go to the dentist in like 10 minutes, so I’m not going to sit here and wax poetic of all its benefits so google it. Seriously, google it…and prime one from Amazon.
New hobbies!!! – Sewing, knitting, beekeeping, oh my! I’m a tactile person, but I’m also bored if I’m not learning. And as it’s technically the start of the school year, I’ve taken the initiative to finally learn all of the things. I miss learning man. You die when you stop learning, swear to god.
Nui Cobalt Designs Essential Oils – OK LIKE I SAID I AM THE IDEAL CONSUMER. Essential oils titled APPALACHIAN AUTUMN, WICKED PUMPKIN, THE FIRST FROST, ET CETERA, TAKE ALL OF MY $$$$$. Idk why I’m yelling, I’m just happy I discovered this.
